Epic Extreme Yarn…. As Seen on Dragons Den!

Picture the biggest yarn that you have ever seen…. are you picturing it? Now double the size of that yarn and double it again and keep going until you get this bad boy….

I couldn’t quite believe how big this yarn was!!

That truly is epic yarn isn’t it?! I first set eyes on this epic extreme yarn while watching Dragons Den with my mum, dad and boyfriend. I was new to knitting then and saw it and thought it was amazing. I said that I would love to use that yarn to make a blanket. It was from a company called Wool Couture. (Knitting, Crochet, Weaving, Macrame, Yarn and Tools — Wool Couture (woolcouturecompany.com))

Fast forwards to Christmas 2019 and my boyfriend Daniel had bought me a ball of this epic yarn and some size 50mm knitting needles that were as big as my arms. I was amazed and instantly fell in love with how soft and fluffy the epic yarn was. It’s 100% merino and a dream to knit with.

It took me around 6 hours one afternoon to finish the pink blanket and I loved it. Had so much fun knitting with such huge needles and Daniel said it was really funny to watch me knitting with them. It took me a while to get to used to the way the needles move and handling the delicate wool. Literally you have to be so careful with this wool as it is so delicate and snaps so easily.

I was so pleased when I’d finished it. I was so excited to buy more of this yarn.

Fast forward to September 2020 when we moved into our new home. I decided I needed an epic throw on our new king sized bed, which of course gave me the perfect excuse to buy more epic extreme yarn. So I did, I bought 6KG of grey yarn and it weighed an absolute ton!

I really enjoyed getting back to the epic extreme yarn and the new challenge of creating something so huge to fit our king sized bed.

It took me about 3 weeks to complete the king sized bed throw, but in between, I was knitting a cardigan and a couple of orders. I savoured every stitch and loved watching it grow. My social media followers followed along with my progress whether they wanted to or not.

It absolutely fascinated me to see how big the yarn and needles look compared to my cardigan that I had on the go with size 20mm needles (which are still pretty huge!)

The 6KG yarn was a challenge to work with as it was so heavy but got easier the smaller the ball of yarn got. I found it worked better if I slowly unravelled the yarn first before knitting because otherwise it breaks really easily. There was a few times where I snapped the yarn and had to tie it back together. So if you’re considering knitting with this yarn, you need to be very careful.

It was so exciting getting started…

I love that the blanket grew quickly and I really enjoyed measuring it and seeing how much it grew with each session I spent knitting on it.

The best feeling ever though was when I’d finished it and we carried it upstairs (it was so heavy that Daniel had to help me carry it) and put it on the bed. I was so chuffed to see it on the bed and to know that I’d actually created it.

I hope this blog post has managed to inspire some of you to visit the Wool Couture Website and get knitting with some epic extreme yarn. Epic Extreme Yarn 100% Pure Merino by Wool Couture (woolcouturecompany.com) Trust me, you will not regret it.

Happy Knitting 🙂
