Bookmark Pattern

You will need….

  • Pair of 3.5 (UK size) knitting needles
  • Darning needle (for weaving in the loose ends)
  • 2 buttons of your colour choice.
  • DK yarn in two colours of your choice – I used “Knitcraft Everyday DK yarn” in Blue and White from Hobbycraft.
  • White felt (or colour of your choice to match your yarn)
  • Thread in button colour and sewing needle.
  • Scissors
  • Stitch Holder
  • Row counter (if needed).

Abbreviations Used:

K – Knit

P – Purl

KFB – Knit into the front and then the back of a single stitch (+1 stitch).

Sts – Stitches

Let’s Get Knitting….

(A) = Blue        (B) = White

Start knitting at the bottom of your bookmark, with Triangle 1.

Cast on 2 sts in (A) – (work both triangles using (A))

Row 1 – K1, Kfb (3)

Row 2 – Purl entire row. Purl this row and every even alternative row until pattern states otherwise.

Row 3 – K2, Kfb (4)

Row 5 – K3, Kfb (5)

Row 7 – K4, Kfb (6)

Row 9 – K5, Kfb (7)

Row 11 – K6, Kfb (8)

Row 13 – K7, Kfb (9)

Row 15 – K8, Kfb (10)

Row 16 – Purl row and then cut yarn.

Place sts onto a stitch holder.

Triangle 2…

Cast on 2 sts in (A)

Row 1 – Kfb, K1 (3)

Row 2 – Purl entire row. Purl this row and every even alternative row until pattern states otherwise.

Row 3 – Kfb, K2 (4)

Row 5 – Kfb, K3 (5)

Row 7 – Kfb, K4 (6)

Row 9 – KFb, K5 (7)

Row 11 – Kfb, K6 (8)

Row 13 – KFb, K7 (9)

Row 15 – Kfb, K8 (10)

Row 16 – Purl entire row.

Slide sts along the left-hand needle. Slide 10 sts from the stitch holder on to the left-hand needle so you now have 20 sts. The points of the triangles should be on opposite sides.

Row 17 – Knit across entire row (20)

Row 18 – Knit entire row (20)

Row 19 – Purl entire row (20)

Row 20 – Knit entire row (20)

Row 21 – (A) K2, Join B, (B) K16, (A) K2

Row 22 – (A) P2, (B) P16, (A) P2

Rows 23 – 35 – Repeat Row 21 and Row 22 6 times

Break off yarn (B) continue in (A) until told otherwise.

Row 36 – K entire row

Row 37 – P entire row

Row 38 – K entire row

Row 39 – P entire row

Row 40 – (A) K2, re-join B, (B) K16, (A) K2

Row 41 – (A) P2, (B) P16, (A) P2

Rows 42 – 54 – Repeat Row 40 and Row 41 6 times

Break off yarn (B) continue in (A) until told otherwise.

Row 55 – K entire row

Row 56 – P entire row

Row 57 – K entire row

Row 58 – P entire row

Row 59 – (A) K2, re-join B, (B) K16, (A) K2

Row 60 – (A) P2, (B) P16, (A) P2

Rows 61 – 72 Repeat Row 59 and Row 60 6 times

Break off yarn (B) continue in (A) until told otherwise.

Row 73 – K entire row

Row 74 – P entire row

Rows 75 – 80 – Repeat Rows 73 and 74 3 times

Row 81 – Cast off knit wise.

Weave in any loose ends.

To make tassels on the end of your bookmark….

  • Cut 8 lengths of yarn B, fold in half, thread through the darning needle. Put the darning needle through the stitch at the point of the triangle and pull through. (repeat for the second tassel).

Sew buttons in place in the centre under the 1st and 2nd squares on the bookmark.

Lay your work flat on a piece of coloured felt (I used white to match the squares). Pin the bookmark to the felt, cut out and sew together. Alternatively, you could knit another piece the same and sew these together.

Now…. Get reading and enjoy your new bookmark.
